Basileae, (1598. per Sebastianum Henricpetri.) (8)+1582+302+(2)p. The first four and the final leaf replaced by copies.
The author was an Augustinian monk. His dictionary first appeared in 1502. Its popularity is demonstrated by the approximately 125 editions issued between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries in thirteen recognised variants. Hungarian equivalents first appeared in the ten-language edition of 1585. The eleven-language version was first published in 1590; the present edition follows the same introduction and arrangement but is newly typeset, furnished with different ornaments, and expanded with the new headwords introduced in the 1594 edition. “With its many thousands of Hungarian words, it far surpassed all previously published vocabularies and became a source for later Hungarian lexicography. Debate over the authorship of the Hungarian glosses ultimately led to the acceptance of Szily’s theory attributing them to Péter Laskai Csókás and two Hungarian students at Wittenberg.” (Borda: 6428.)
Restored, blindstamped, contemporary leather with clasps. Some leaves slightly stained.
