139. (Kazinczy Ferenc): Tövisek és virágok.
... Kevés számú Nyomtatványokban.
Széphalom (Sárospatak), 1811. (Nádaskay András ny.) 1t. (engraved title page)+(4)+52p. First edition.
Perhaps Kazinczy’s most important work, marking the beginning of the language reform debates and considered one of the milestones of Hungarian literature. The author originally intended to title it “Arrows”, which suggests that his aim was an attack against the conservative trend. It contains 43 epigrams, two of which deal with language reform, three with the pronunciation of foreign words, while the others proclaim new aesthetic principles. Its publication was praised by, among others, Dániel Berzsenyi and Benedek Virág. The inscription on the title page, „Kevés számú Nyomtatványokban” (In a small number of copies), has led to the work being considered one of the first bibliophile editions in the modern sense, designed to give contemporary collectors a sense of exclusivity.
Slightly worn, contemporary leather.
