Perhaps the most important milestone in the history of Hungarian pedagogy is the educational decree issued by Maria Theresa on 22 August 1777, in which she attempted to regulate the entire Hungarian educational system. The queen entrusted the task to József Ürményi, who prepared the draft with Dániel Tersztyánszky, Pál Makó, and Ádám Kollár. The edict, conceived in the spirit of the Enlightenment, established a state-controlled public education administration and a unified school system. It also placed church schools under state control, introduced subjects of public benefit into the curriculum and more practical teaching methods. The second edition was published in 1806.
Contemporary leather. Spine richly gilt.
