Perhaps the single most important landmark in the history of Hungarian pedagogy, Maria Theresia’s educational decree of 22 August 1777 sought to comprehensively regulate the entire Hungarian school system. The queen entrusted József Ürményi with the project, which he prepared the scheme together with Dániel Tersztyánszky, Pál Makó, and Ádám Kollár. Conceived in the spirit of the Enlightenment, the decree established a state-directed system of public education and a unified school structure. It also placed ecclesiastical schools under state supervision, introduced practical subjects into the curriculum, and promoted more pragmatic teaching methods. A second edition appeared in 1806.
