The future chief rabbi of Nagyvárad was born in Szered, Nyitra county. Known in his time as Reb Mose Cvi Hirsch, he represented the most conservative strand of Orthodox Judaism and was a determined opponent of the Neolog movement. He never preached in Hungarian, remaining faithful to Yiddish. The photograph was taken in János Lojanek’s studio in Nagyvárad around 1880.
