114. Mann, Thomas (1875-1955), writer.
... Autograph lines in German on a card mounted on the work:
„Dem jungen Dichter Ernst Aszdalos. Zum Gedenken an unsere Begegnung am Abend des 13. I. 37. Budapest Thomas Mann”.
We could not find any information about the recipient of the inscription, Ernő Asztalos. Presumably, he is a self-proclaimed poet who obviously wanted to impress the writer. Thomas Mann visited Hungary several times, for the first time in 1913 (this is when he also met Kosztolányi). He stayed with us for the last time on 13-14 January 1937, when he read a chapter of his novel "Lotte in Weimar" at the Magyar Theatre in the organization of the Szép Szó magazine. The above recommendation was made then and later attached in a copy of the 1931 edition of "Novellen". The writer received the Nobel Prize in 1929.
Inscribed by the author. Slightly worn, original half leather. Spine gilt.
