112. Charter issued by the chapter of Nyitra.

112. Charter issued by the chapter of Nyitra.

Document in Latin.

The chapter of Nyitra records that Sigismund, son of the late János Bánolnai (Babona-i), personally appeared before the chapter and declared that he sold, with full warranty, one half of his estate at Mesterfalu (Győr County), together with all its appurtenances and revenues, to Péter Pathko, son of the late János Pathko of Komárom, and to János, son of the latter, including their property situated on the River Danube within the boundaries of Kajánd (Kayanth) in Komárom County, for the sum of 500 gold florins.

The charter was written in Gothic cursive script, consistent with the period's scribal practice, although its overall appearance is somewhat irregular and differs from the more orderly charters issued by the chapter of Nyitra between 1505 and 1510. Among the persons mentioned in the document, Péter Pathko and his son János also appear in the unquestionably authentic charter of Péter Szentgyörgyi, royal judge of Hungary, likewise included in the present sale. The authenticity of the present charter is further supported by the remains of the red-white-green silk cord that once held the hanging seal, which appears contemporary; an identical silk cord survives on a charter issued by the chapter of Nyitra on 30 April 1509 (according to information kindly provided by the National Archives of Hungary).

Parchment document. Slightly stained, with faded text on the right side, lower corner missing, and minor losses along the folds affecting the text.
