... Autograph picture postcard to Erika Mann, addressed “Liebe Frau Erika”

He thanks the recipient for the “Zugvögel” (“Migratory Birds”), adding that his wife Ninon has travelled to Greece and therefore will not be able to see the gift for another two weeks. The recipient – Thomas Mann’s eldest child – was a remarkably versatile figure who, in addition to her literary and screenwriting career, worked as an actress and journalist. The “Zugvögel” mentioned in the postcard refers to a series of fairy tales she wrote between 1953 and 1956; she most probably sent Hesse the collected edition published in 1959. Ninon Hesse, the writer’s third wife, was perhaps the most important companion of his life and later became the guardian of his literary estate.
