110. Seldes, George: The People Don’t Know.
... The American Press and the Cold War.
New York, (1949.) Gaer Associates. (8)+342p.
The flyleaf inscribed: "To Deputy Premier Rakosi with many thanks for the interview – and with best wishes George Seldes Nov. 2. 1949". The American journalist, who is still referred to today as a model of independent journalism, was a secret member of the Communist Party of the United States. Since there is no evidence in the KGB files that he received direct financial support, he is a typical representative of the Western intelligentsia, aptly described by Lenin as a “useful idiot”. He provided a striking example of impartiality when he joined the Rákosi regime's smear campaign against Cardinal Mindszenty, accusing the high priest of anti-Semitism and Nazi sympathies.
Original cloth with dust jacket.
