108. Albert Szent-Györgyi (1893–1986), physician and biochemist.

... Autograph letter to the physician-professor István Rusznyák, addressed “Kedves Pistám!” (My dear Pista!)

The writer expresses his distress at Rusznyák’s news – most probably referring to the anti-Jewish laws and the recipient’s dismissal from his deanship. He then discusses in detail how he might help his friend secure a research position abroad for one or two years. At the time, Szent-Györgyi himself was preparing to travel to the United States, first to Nashville and then to New York, and promises to mobilise his contacts there on Rusznyák’s behalf. Towards the end of the letter he reflects on his own dilemma about returning home: “Valószinü, hogy Amerikában majd nekem is adnak valami mézes madzagot, amire igen-el vagy nem-el kell felelni. Kérdés, van é egyáltalán lehetősége annak, hogy az ember otthon dolgozhasson a legközelebbi években még akkor is, ha nem üt be a nagy Krach” (It is likely that in America they too will offer me some tempting prospect, to which I must answer yes or no. The question is whether there will be any possibility at all of working at home in the coming years, even if the great crash does not occur). Signed “Albi”.
