Adapted from Defoe, the German original appeared in 1779–80 and was translated into many languages. The Serbian version was made by Joakim Vujić, playwright, director, and impresario born in Baja, who staged the first Serbian-language performance in Hungary and was nicknamed “the father of Serbian theatre.” He lived in Baja and Szentendre before moving to Serbia, where from 1834 he directed the princely theatre in Kragujevac.
