The author of this work on early Hungarian history was a linguist, historian, and jurist. Commissioned by the Hungarian Learned Society, he set out in April 1844 in search of the ancient homeland of the Hungarians. He spent a year among the Csángós, collecting 450 Hungarian words and 339 Hungarian place names. He also travelled in the Caucasus region, the Don bend (Levedia), and the middle reaches of the Dnieper (Etelköz), searching for traces of the ancient Hungarians.
