480. A’ Selyem-eresztésnek módja...

Szebenben, 1754. Sárdi Sámuel ny. 96p.

The first Hungarian-language book on silk cultivation. The German original’s author is unknown; according to some sources, the translator was the printer, Sámuel Sárdi. Silk cultivation in Hungary began in the late 17th century, introduced by Italians. Growth came under Maria Theresa, who founded the first silk school in Eszék and appointed Károly Sollenghi as royal commissioner. Further revival occurred during the Reform Era, when leading statesmen like Wesselényi, Kossuth, and Széchenyi promoted silk industry; Széchenyi even addressed it in his Hitel (Credit). In 1840, the most significant work on the subject, Selyemrül, was published.
