The author was the imperial steward on the Pottendorf estate confiscated from Count Ferenc Nádasdy for his involvement in the Wesselényi conspiracy. Here he became familiar with the Mausoleum published by Nádasdy, as well as the surviving copperplates of its illustrations. Making use of these, Schad produced his work depicting Hungarian rulers from the beginnings up to the accession of Joseph I. Since the Mausoleum covers Hungarian history only up to Ferdinand III, he commissioned the Augsburg engraver Elias Nessenthaler to prepare the portraits of Leopold I and Joseph I. Dedicated to the latter, the volume presents kings and leaders in an unusual reverse chronological order. Schad set the figures of the Mausoleum in magnificent, richly decorated Baroque frames, creating perhaps the most beautiful decorative album of the period, much rarer than its predecessor.
