198. Vörösmarty Mihál(y): Marót bán. Szomorújáték öt felvonásban.
Budán, 1838. M. Kir. Egy. (2)+102+(2)p. First edition.
One of the earliest accusations of plagiarism in Hungarian literature was connected with this drama, originally titled Korog bán. A young writer, Ferenc Hazucha, accused Vörösmarty of having taken one scene from his own play Iván. Vörösmarty defended himself by stating that although he had read the submitted manuscript as a member of the Academy committee, his own work had already been completed earlier, and he had made only minor revisions afterwards. The play, first performed on 19 May 1838, achieved great success, and the book edition of 750 copies published in August sold out within a few months. The work also received the Academy’s annual grand prize.
