179. Scarce, coloured Ottoman manuscript map of the Bosphorus.
1697.
The map field is framed by a golden line. The representation is likely based on portolan charts: the three richly decorated compass roses and navigational bars show similarity. Its creator also decorated the map also with the depictions of five cities. The ottoman text below the picture contains the time of the creation (the year 1109 was recorded based on the Muslim calendar, which is 1697 according to the Gregorian calendar used today). The 21 line at the verso – written in Naskh script – talk about the opposite of faith and knowledge.
Stained on the left side - outside the map field - caused by the glue of a previous repair. On the back, the used paper covers the end of 8 rows.
Dimensions: 265 x 170 mm.

The piece is the lot of the 4th auction of Hereditas Antiquarium, which took place on December 2, 2022, and cannot be purchased after the end of the auction.
