An important episode of the Hungarian language reform movement was the competition announced by István Kultsár in the Magyar Kurir in 1804 on the state of Hungarian language cultivation. The jury included, besides the organiser, Sándor Prónay, Lajos Schedius, Miklós Révai, Ferenc Verseghy, and Benedek Virág. Of the twenty-one submissions received, Teleki’s work was awarded first prize. In addition to summarising the movement's history and providing a historical foundation for its aims, the author discusses in detail the factors hindering the cultivation of the Hungarian language, while the appendix challenges the hegemony of Latin as the language of scholarship. The high standard of the competition is evident in the fact that three additional works also received prizes.
