Miklós Szerelmey was one of the most important Hungarian lithographers, as demonstrated by the various lithographic techniques represented in the plates of this volume. According to the preface, the publication aimed to popularise Hungary’s glorious past and thereby strengthen patriotic sentiment. Among the contributors were Gábor Döbrentei, Joseph Häufler, Mihály Horváth, Imre Henszlmann, and Ferenc Toldy. Alongside historical scenes and depictions of folk costume, the volume also contains views of Dévény, Esztergom, Pannonhalma, and Nagybörzsöny. Particularly beautiful is the decorative lithographed title page at the beginning of the volume, where the richly ornamented floral border is surmounted by the Hungarian coat of arms supported by two angels, while below appears a charming small view of Pest. A simpler version of the album, with German text and containing only twenty-five plates, was also issued. Even this already rare publication is among the greatest rarities in its original binding.
Slightly worn, original hardpaper. Minor wear to the front cover affects small portions of the text and border decoration.
