155. Dezső Kosztolányi (1885–1936), writer, poet.

Autograph letter to Mihály Babits, addressed "Kedves jó barátom" (My Dear Good Friend).

Kosztolányi apologises for his delayed reply, blaming his poor health: "I suffer greatly these days, so much so that the pen hardly comes to my hand, not for writing, only perhaps for a letter... I swallow three grams of bromine daily, and I am plagued by such nerves that I can barely sit in a chair." He then warmly praises Babits’s poems, lamenting that the "dozen poets" in Budapest cannot appreciate modern poetry. He lists several titles, some now lost. He notes that, when he has the strength, he is editing the poems of Maupassant (published the following year). He closes: "And answer me. It hurts when one cries into another man and hears no echo."
