142. (Pázmány Péter): Falsae originis motuum Hugaricorum...

... succincta refutatio. Az magyar orszagi tamadasoknak hamissan költött eredetinek, rövid velös hamissitasa.

(Bécs), 1620. (Gelbhaar.) (71)p.

Pázmány’s political polemic, printed in parallel Latin and Hungarian columns, refutes the pamphlet “Querela Hungariae, Magyarország panasza” published in 1619 (RMNy 1179). In that brief work Péter Alvinci – Pázmány’s most worthy Calvinist adversary – attributed the many calamities afflicting the country solely to the Catholic clergy. Pázmány’s response remains engaging even today, not only because of the prelate’s commanding intellect, but also through its concise yet balanced sentences and transparent structure. This is the bilingual Latin-Hungarian edition of the polemic (Latin-only and German editions also appeared). Perhaps the rarest of all Pázmány’s works: no copy has ever appeared at auction. Only two copies are preserved in public collections, one complete and one fragmentary.

20th-century leather.

RMNy 1202.; RMK I 506.; RMK II 408.
