130. Hartmann Schedel Világkrónikájának magyar vonatkozású lapjai.

(Nuremberg, 1493.)

The collection contains all leaves of the 1493 Nuremberg edition of the "Liber chronicarum" that are related to Hungary. Intertextual woodcuts are also visible in some of them - in addition to some chapters of Hungarian history. Among the persons depicted are Saint Stephen and Gisela, Saint Kinga and Matthias Corvinus. The views show Szabács Castle and another fictitious Hungarian town. The first authentic view of Buda, which shows it at the time of King Matthias and is printed with two woodblocks, is of outstanding importance. The veduta depicting the city from the east appeared on pages 138-139 of the volume. According to the literature, it was created based on the work of the artists contributing to the volume, Michael Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff.

The value of our piece is undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that it was compiled by László Gróf, a renowned map historian and collector, who lived in Oxford. In addition to his academic merits, Gróf, who emigrated in 1956, was a tireless supporter of the cause of Transylvanian Hungarians until his death. He donated part of his collection to our national library, and a smaller collection enriches the Nádasdy Castle in Sárvár.

Modern half vellum in cloth case.
