127. Váli Mihály, Nedeliczi: Házi Orvos Szótárotska...
... Az Az Betű Szerént Magyarúl Szólló Orvos Könyvetske
Győrött, 1792. Streibig József. (6)+200p.
Mihály Váli was considered a notorious charlatan by contemporary physicians, but he enjoyed great popularity. He had no medical qualifications, his "experiential cure" was based on his knowledge of trees and herbs. In Italy, as a soldier of the Károlyi hussar regiment, he successfully cured epilepsy, and he was almost summoned to the Inquisition for this, but he fled to Hungary – where he became the family doctor of György Erdődy, justiciar. Erdődy greatly appreciated him because he effectively relieved his joint pains. He was also the medical officer of Zala County for a while, but when it was proven that he did not have a valid certificate, he was stripped of his position. Later (allegedly for money), he obtained a doctorate in medicine at the University of Padua. His excellent knowledge of plants was also recognized by his reviewers. In his book, published after his death, he describes the healing effects of trees and herbs in alphabetical order. The work was also published in 1797 in two versions.
