One of the most important documents relating to the foundation of the Hungarian National Museum. The custodian of the book and coin collections donated by Ferenc Széchényi, Jakab Ferdinánd Miller had already conceived the idea of establishing a national museum in 1805, though at first he found little support. In the following year, however, he gained the patronage of Archduke Joseph, Palatine of Hungary, who forwarded the proposal to Count József Esterházy of the Council of Lieutenancy. A committee subsequently elaborated a detailed concept on the basis of which the architect János Hild prepared the plans. The Palatine had the text printed at his own expense in 1,200 copies together with Hild’s designs. The Latin text was written by Miller, while the Hungarian translation was prepared by József Strázsay. In order to secure support, the Palatine distributed the publication both to the counties and to the deputies of the Diet then in session. The law establishing the museum was finally passed in the following year (Act VIII of 1808).
